40th New York Infantry (Inscribed Boulder)

The 40th New York Infantry served as members of DeTrobriand’s Brigade in Birney’s Division of the Third Corps, Army of the Potomac. The regiment is honored by a monument and an engraved boulder.

Location: Located to the left of the monument to the 40th New York in the Valley of Death.

Description: Boulder is inscribed with a “40″ and a diamond. It may predate the regimental monument. The inscription reads: 40th NY. There is a diamond, symbol of the Third Army Corps.
